Monday, April 14, 2003, 6-9PM

The New York ArtCorps Committee Presents:
CAREER STRATEGIES:
A SURVIVAL KIT FOR CHALLENGING TIMES IN THE ARTS

with Geri Thomas, Thomas & Associates
and Susan Koblin Schear, ArtIsIn

Join us for a lively discussion with ArtTable members Geri Thomas and Susan Koblin Schear, both expert management consultants who will give us practical advice on how to take charge of your career in these challenging economic times. Examine trends in the arts and business environment that are affecting the job market and learn how to turn them into an advantage. Identify opportunities inside institutions; how to create strategic alliances and partnerships; new growth areas for consultancies; how to reposition your business. What are your core competencies and what additional skills do you need to remain competitive in the marketplace? Discover how can you leverage opportunity when faced with a shrinking budget for a project. How you can take your career in a new direction and embrace change. Learn to think like an entrepreneur - set a new goal and map out a game plan. Practice the art of creative networking!

ARTISIN, LLC specializes in "leading the arts to creative business solutions." Susan Koblin Schear founded the company to offer comprehensive business development and management services to arts organizations, arts related businesses and artists. Her visionary strengths, participation and passion allow her to be resourceful and provide links to partners inside and outside the arts and culture community while creating and expanding economic opportunities that are mutually beneficial and reciprocal. Her work in evolving and changing communities benefits her clients by customizing services and providing all aspects of business and strategic planning, marketing, branding and identity. She also focuses on collaborative development, needs assessment, community development and outreach. Ms. Schear serves as an active member on several boards. She chairs the steering committee for the Arts and Business Council National Arts Marketing Project (NAMP), and has been recently asked to serve on a newly developed NYFA steering committee. She frequently provides workshops and seminars to various nonprofit and industry specialty groups and associations. She is currently teaching at Pratt Institute and has also taught at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies and F.I.T. She has published articles she has written on these same topics.

Geri Thomas is President of Thomas & Associates, an innovative firm that offers staffing, consulting and training programs for museums and art businesses nationwide. Her popular workshops include Empowering Leadership; Management and High-level Communication Skills for Arts Professionals; and Creative Recruiting. Before starting her own firm, Geri was Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Jewish Museum in New York; part of the initial planning team for the new national museum in New Zealand; and has developed and toured numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally. She is Adjunct Professor at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, teaching Museum Management and Fundraising for the Arts. She is co-chair of the Mid-Atlantic Museum Association's Annual Meeting to be held in Newark this year.
